Membership Policy

Basic Membership in NYSERNet is open to any not-for-profit institution, regardless of geographic location, which has a research, education, healthcare or cultural mission. Also eligible for Basic Membership is any for-profit organization that requires certain NYSERNet services in order to enable or participate in research and/or education related activities involving any institution satisfying the former requirement.

To be eligible to purchase NYSERNet Membership Services, an institution must be a Participating Member of NYSERNet. To qualify as a Participating Member, an institution must satisfy the requirement for Basic Membership and remit to NYSERNet an annual membership fee, which is established by the NYSERNet Board and reviewed by that body on an annual basis.

There are two tiers of Participating Membership. Each tier has an associated membership fee, but Participating Members, regardless of tier, are not subject to discrimination relative to the purchase of NYSERNet Membership Services. Here are the two tiers:

  • Tier One: Doctoral Research Extensive institutions and for-profit entities
  • Tier Two: Master's, Baccalaureate and Associate's Colleges, Museums, Hospitals, Public Libraries, Public Television Stations, K12 Schools, School Districts, BOCES and other not-for-profit entities

The following are considered NYSERNet Membership Services and are available only to NYSERNet Participating Members:

  • Commercial Internet
  • NYSERNet Research & Education Network and related service (e.g. Integrated Access)
  • NYSERNet Lambda Services

The Board of Directors shall establish pricing for these services, annually, along with any additional requirements for participating in these offerings.

The following may be acquired by any institution meeting the requirements of Basic Membership.

  • New York City Metro Dark Fiber
  • Colocation Services at the Colo@32
  • Services ancillary to the above, such as Remote Hands
  • Downstream R&E Network services as described in [ NYSERNet's Downstream Policy ]

Pricing for these services are established by NYSERNet staff on an individual case basis.

NYSERNet reserves the right to suspend or revoke Membership status from any institution found to be in violation of the terms and conditions of this policy.

The NYSERNet president is authorized to waive or otherwise reduce the membership fee on an individual case basis, and shall report on membership program at the major Board meetings.
